The Cheese Box is a phenomenal piece of visual art that has launched into the film industry and will make it’s world premiere debut at the Short Film corner at The 69th Cannes Film Festival this coming May.

The Cheese Box was directed by the renowned, Paddy Murphy but also starred well-known Limerick and Irish actor, Kevin Kiely Jnr. Kevin also produced the short through his newly established production company, IsleBoro Productions.

The story of The Cheese Box portrays the life of a young Irish family during the times of strict catholic ruling and influence in Ireland. I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to sit down with Kevin and watch his mind unfold as he told me about this amazing short film.

Kevin really felt a deep need to fulfill this role as he was playing the role of his maternal grandfather, Michael ‘Draughty’ Purcell, who lived in Janesboro during the middle to late 20th century. Kevin told me that, “I’m very proud of it (The Cheese Box), it tells a story about a particular type of control that was very strong in Ireland in the 20th century.”

The story is simple in its essence however captures “a residue of this particular type of control.” Although the plot is yet to be revealed to the world, Kevin described The Cheese Box, as “one man having to do something overnight and it’s a direct contradiction of the church, so he essentially disobeys the church and the church’s supposed better judgment.”

Along with its debut at the short film corner at Cannes, The Cheese Box will hopefully have a long film festival season ahead, as it’ll be screened next at The Viva Film Festival in Sarajevo, Bosnia and has been also submitted to other distinguished film festivals all around the world.

The Cheese Box is truly captivating, having watched the film myself I was blown away by the simplicity of the film but when it got to the final scene it took my breath away. The Cheese Box is certainly important for Limerick audiences, and is set to make some noise, further afield at Film Festivals for the rest of it’s journey on the festival circuit.
