Saint Mary’s Cathedral to welcome The Choir of St Patricks Cathedral Dublin

the Choir of St Patrick’s Cathedral Dublin will be performing in Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick on Friday, June 21.

On Friday 21st June at 7.30pm, the Choir of St Patrick’s Cathedral Dublin will be performing in Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick. The Cathedral is delighted and privileged to welcome the world-famous Choir of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin to Limerick. This concert is the highlight of the venue’s musical programme for 2019. Saint Patrick’s Cathedral has a strong musical tradition, with music playing an integral part in its daily life since its foundation in the thirteenth century. Henri de Londres created a college of sixteen vicars choral who lived within the precincts of the cathedral. Archbishop Richard Talbot endowed a college of six minor canons and six boy choristers in 1431. His purpose was to ensure the provision of polyphonic choral music in the Cathedral. In addition to leading the worship, the Cathedral Choir regularly gives concerts both home and away, broadcasts on both TV and Radio, has also made many recordings (including four recent commercial CD recordings with Regent Records) and goes on tour regularly – including France, Denmark, UK and this year for the first time, Sweden. Saint Mary’s which was gifted to the Church by Donal Mór O’Brien, the last King of Thomond has been a site of Christian worship since 1168 and it one of the oldest buildings in Limerick City. The choir visit forms part of the Cathedral’s ethos which is all about celebrating and promoting the Cathedral within Limerick and beyond. Speaking of the concert, the Dean, the Very Rev’d Niall J. Sloane said, “Saint Mary’s is privileged and honoured to welcome the Choir of St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin to Limerick. This is a rare opportunity to hear the choir in Limerick, and we are delighted that they will be a part of our music calendar in 2019.”

About St Marys Cathedral:

Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Limerick City was founded in 1168 and is over 850 years old. It is a place of worship and one of Limerick’s Top Attractions. It was founded on the site of a palace donated by Donal Mor O’Brien King of Munster. Experts believe that parts of the palace are incorporated into the present structure of the Cathedral.

The most prominent is the West Door, which tradition has it was the main entrance to the palace. The palace had been built on the site of the Viking meeting house. This had been the centre of government in the early medieval Viking city.
