The application deadline for The Hare’s Corner initiative has been extended to March 30, 2025 due to popular demand

Limerick City and County Council has announced the extension of the application deadline for The Hare’s Corner initiative to 30th March 2025 due to popular demand.

This innovative biodiversity project, in collaboration with Burrenbeo Trust, has garnered significant interest from landowners across Limerick, with close to 90 applications received to date.

The Hare’s Corner aims to support landowners in creating more space for nature on their land through practical actions such as the creation of wildlife ponds, native mini-woodlands, wildlife hedges, and heritage mini-orchards. The initiative provides essential materials, micro-funding, professional services, and guidance to help landowners take impactful steps towards enhancing biodiversity.

Sinead McDonnell, Biodiversity Officer at Limerick City and County Council announced the extension saying, “We are thrilled with the overwhelming response to The Hare’s Corner initiative. The extension of the deadline will allow even more landowners to participate and contribute to the creation of vital habitats for nature.”

Many landowners are eager to support nature but often struggle with knowing where or how to begin. The initiative bridges this gap between awareness and action by offering practical guidance, essential materials, and, when needed, micro-funding – helping turn intentions into impactful biodiversity actions on the ground.

The term ‘Hare’s Corner’ is an old farming expression for the corner of a field or an area of rough ground which wasn’t intensively farmed, so instead it was ‘left to nature’.

The Hare’s Corner is a ‘goodwill’ project, co-ordinated by part-time staff and volunteers at the charity, the Burrenbeo Trust. Our mission is to support landowners to create as much space for nature as possible with whatever funding we can muster.
