It was amazing to see the support, completely lovely to see Limerick people coming out in force to support a local company,” Nick Ryan, Founder of Thomond Gate Whiskey said.

Their Hlymrekr Saga whiskey, which was being sold at Fine Wines on Roaches Street, sold out in 90 minutes, and their John Wolfe Ambrose whiskey, which was being sold online,  sold out yesterday.

Thomond Gate Whiskey would like to thank everyone for their support.

Thomond Gate Whiskey is delighted to announce that they are releasing not one but two new whiskies just in time for Christmas this year as part of their new ‘Departed Spirits of Limerick’ and ‘Saga’ series.

Nick Ryan, founder of Thomond Gate Whiskey says, “In a new golden age, we believe Limerick should be known again for its whiskey. As an independent bottler, we have taken the first steps to restoring Thomond Gate Whiskey.

“We have sourced and curated an Irish whiskey where we have taken inspiration from the past, with a nod to honouring the tradition but not bowing to it. If you believe as we do, that Limerick should be known again for its whiskey, tell others what we are doing and help us restore our lost whiskey heritage around the globe.”

The first new whiskey, ‘Hlymrekr Saga’ was made in collaboration with fellow Limerick business, Fine Wines.

The whiskey is inspired by the Limerick Danish roots and the Vikings who established the settlement on Kings Island.

Limerick has long links with Scandanavia through the Danes and Vikings, and it is in tribute to those links that the Single Pot Still Irish whiskey was finished in a French Oak cask, which was sourced from Staunings Distillery Denmark and was used to make their limited edition Single Cask Danish Rye Whiskey.

The cask was transported to Ireland where it was filled with what would become Hlymrekr Saga. The whiskey has been matured in a first-fill ex-bourbon cask and has now been bottled under bond, uncut and unaltered.

Hlymrekr Saga was sold exclusively in-store at Fine Wines at 42 Roaches Street and is already sold out.

The second new release is a Single Malt Irish whiskey called ‘John Wolfe Ambrose.’

The whiskey is inspired by Newcastle West born John Wolfe Ambrose, whose vision, scientific knowledge, and courage aided in making New York the greatest seaport in the world. In tribute to him, Thomond Gate Whiskey sourced casks from Kings County Distillery in Brooklyn, NY, which followed the very waterways back to Ireland imagined by John Wolfe Ambrose.

The Peated Bourbon 55ltrs quarter casks were crafted from the American white oak, naturally seasoned for two years in the southwest of the US and Canada, and charred to release the natural character of the wood. The cask was then filled with double distilled new make from Kings County Distillery, Brooklyn.

After years of maturing the bourbon, the cask was disgorged and sent to Ireland where it was then filled with Single Malt which had matured in ex-bourbon casks and finished in Pinot Noir casks.

On the centenary of the Thomond Gate Distillery closing its doors two years ago, the new Limerick independent bottler Thomond Gate Whiskey launched the first Limerick whiskey brand in 100 years.

Their first 100 bottles sold out in less than 12 hours, and the whiskey has quickly gained a cult following.
