Christmas is always a time of celebration yet remembrance also has a large role to play among the festivities. For the sixth year running the Thomond Rotary Club Remembrance Tree has been erected on Bedford Row in Limerick City.

Thousands of people arrive beneath the tree each year and this year is no different. Visitors gather to take time out from the hustle and bustle of the Christmas period to remember those who can no longer be here.

Yellow ribbons are given to those who descend upon the Remembrance Tree. The name of a loved one is written on the ribbon, be it someone close to the heart who has passed away or a loved one who has emigrated to another land. The ribbon is then placed among the other infinite number of remembrance ribbons upon the tree.

Donations from the Thomond Rotary Club Remembrance Tree will be given to three nominated charities. This year the charities that will benefit greatly from these donations are the Mid-West Cancer Foundation, Corbett Suicide Prevention Patrol and Cuan Mhuire.

Mayor Kevin Sheahan officially launched the Thomond Rotary Club Remembrance Tree earlier this week and spoke of how the tree allows people a small opportunity to remember the loved ones we have lost or those who cannot be with us this Christmas.

Mayor Sheahan also praised the many volunteers who are helping to hand out ribbons and collect donations. Once again the Remembrance Tree has been a huge success and spaces on the tree for ribbons are beginning to become scarce.

If you would like to take some time out to remember your loved ones, why not take a trip to Bedford Row and visit this marvellous tree.
