The course as in previous years will start at the slipway at St Michaels Rowing Club, proceed upriver to a turning buoy above the Curragower, under the walls of King John’s castle, under Sarsfield Bridge by Shannon Rowing Club and back to finish at St Michael’s with an overall distance of 1800m making it a challenging event in the country’s largest estuary.

The best viewing points for the event will be on Sarsfield Bridge, along Clancy Strand and O’Callaghan Strand at both the start and the finish.

The Thomond Swim first took place in the early 1950s at a time when there was no indoor swimming pool in the city and only a summer swimming season. The course at that time started at St Michael’s Rowing club and proceeded up the Abbey River to finish at Athlunkard Boat Club. Limerick Masters Swimming Club re-established the event in 2008 and after some trials settled on the modern course.

The event this year is supported by the Shannon Foynes Port Company for whom the organisers are very grateful, Limerick Marine Search and Rescue and the Civil Defence who provide essential safety cover and support while the swimmers are in the water.

Entrants must provide a personal time for 400m and show they have completed an open water event in the last 12 months.

Limerick Masters swimming club is a competitive masters club that has a passion for swimming, healthy lifestyle, quality coaching and good fun. The club has over 80 members made up of all ages from 18 years and upwards, and trains four times a week in the University of Limerick pool and Grove Island pool.
