The course as in previous years will start at the slipway at St Michael’s Rowing Club, proceed upriver to a turning buoy above the Curragower, under the walls of King John’s castle, under Sarsfield Bridge by Shannon Rowing Club and back to finish at St Michael’s with an overall distance of 1800m making it a truly challenging and exhilarating event.

The event, as usual, is organised by St Michael’s Rowing Club. St. Michaels Rowing Club has been established since as far back as 1901. Over the past decades, the club has become renowned as one of Ireland’s most prominent rowing clubs. The club currently caters for all age groups, including oarsmen and oarswomen all the way from the Junior 12’s category to their expert rowers, the Masters.

The Thomond Swim first took place in the early 1950s at a time when there was no indoor swimming pool in the city and only a summer swimming season. The course at that time started at St Michael’s Rowing club and proceeded up the Abbey River to finish at Athlunkard Boat Club. Limerick Masters Swimming Club re-established the event in 2008 and after some trials settled on the modern course.

The staging area for this year’s event will be at St Michaels rowing club with changing areas, registrations, assembly and start/finish.

In line with best practice and with the safety of all participants paramount the event is run with support from Limerick Marine Search and Rescue who provide safety boat cover for participants. Limerick Kayak club will also support the MSR.

The cost of entry to this year’s Thomond Swim is €20. For more information on the event, email [email protected]

The event is currently full however, a waiting list has been put in place for those still hoping to partake in the Thomond Swim 2021. No entries are allowed on the day of the event.
