The Thomond Wind Ensemble secures 1st place win in the Senior Section at the South of Ireland Band Championships
The Thomond Wind Ensemble has taken the Irish wind band scene by storm, securing a 1st place win in the Senior Section at the South of Ireland Band Championships in Clonakilty, Co. Cork.
34 bands competed in this National Competition. The ensemble was awarded the coveted Whycherly Perpetual Cup in what was their first-ever appearance at the competition.
The 60-member, Limerick-based group also took home the Irish Symphonic Wind Orchestra Award for Best Performance of an Original Wind Band Composition, underlining their musical versatility and commitment to high-level performance.

A further highlight of the day was the awarding of the Kingston Cup for Best Soloist to the ensemble’s principal trumpet, Angel Hernandez, whose virtuosity drew widespread praise. The ensemble performed A Tubo (Symphonic Italian March), Whispers from Beyond, Jitterbug and Lord Tullamore.
Founded in September 2024 by local musician, conductor and educator Dr. Andrew Jordan, the Thomond Wind Ensemble brings together accomplished wind, brass, and percussion players from Limerick and across the Munster region. In less than a year, the group has built a strong reputation for musical excellence and vibrant, engaging performances.
Their 2025 concert season has already seen the ensemble perform in some of Limerick’s most iconic venues, including the Redemptorist Church, St. Joseph’s Church, and the University Concert Hall.
These performances featured exciting collaborations with international ensembles, including the Colony High School Orchestra and Choir (Alaska, USA), Aragon High School (California, USA), and the Benedictine College Band (Kansas, USA). These joint concerts showcased a shared passion for music across cultures and highlighted Thomond’s role as an ambassador for Irish wind music.
Commenting on the win in Clonakilty, Dr. Jordan said, “This is a milestone moment for the Thomond Wind Ensemble. To win not only our section but multiple awards on our first outing at the championships is a testament to the talent, commitment, and spirit of our musicians. We’re excited for what lies ahead.”
With plans for an ambitious autumn/winter season already underway, the Thomond Wind Ensemble is poised to continue its upward trajectory, bringing world-class wind band music to audiences across Ireland and beyond.
