An innovative arts programme for primary schools is launching this month, bringing together three Limerick cultural institutions: The Hunt Museum, Limerick City Gallery of Art and Limerick Museum.

Pupils from schools across Limerick will discover the three collections through workshops and activities, developing their confidence and understanding in visual art, while exploring the theme of identity across the collections.

The programme also includes one-off events such as children-led tours of the collections, training sessions for teachers and a summer showcase.

Cllr. Michael Sheahan, Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, who will open the launch, said, “I’m delighted that these three Limerick cultural institutions are collaborating to make the Hunt Museum, Limerick Museum and Limerick City Gallery of Art more accessible to our young citizens. It is extremely important that young people feel welcomed into these institutions and learn to appreciate the wonderful art and displays within their walls.

“By collaborating the Hunt Museum, Limerick Museum and Limerick City Gallery of Art can capture the imagination and creativity of these young people, which can only be for the betterment of cultural life in Limerick,” he added.

Adam Stoneman, who is coordinating the project, said, “Rather than museums and galleries constantly competing against each other for ‘audience share’ and ‘brand recognition’ this signals a more collaborative approach where schoolchildren can encounter collections side by side, fostering a sense of understanding and ownership of our shared cultural heritage.”

There will be a small fee per pupil to cover delivery costs. Primary schools can book for Spring and Summer terms 2020 from November 21 by contacting The Hunt Museum on 061 490081 or [email protected]. This programme is supported by The Friends of the Hunt Museum and Limerick City and County Council. 

The launch of the Three Muses schools programme will take place on Thursday, November 21 at 12 pm at the Hunt Museum with speeches by the Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr. Michael Sheahan, and Donncha O Treasaigh, Director of Schools, Limerick and Clare Education, and Training Board and Hunt Museum Board member.
