Fifteen-time major champion, Tiger Woods, who was expected to captain Team USA in the Ryder Cup next year has turned down the opportunity, but says he will throw his hat in the ring for the spot at the centenary match in Adare Manor in 2027.

“With my new responsibilities to the TOUR and time commitments involved, I felt like I would not be able to commit the time to Team USA and the players required as a captain,” said Woods in a statement released by PGA of America, but insisted it doesn’t mean he  “wouldn’t want to captain a team in the future”.

Speaking ahead of The Open at Royal Troon this week, Woods gave hope to golf fans that he would be willing to don the red, white, and blue of the USA in line for the 2027 Ryder Cup at the Adare Manor.

Mentioning his hopes to see his good friend, JP McManus at the 2027 event, Woods told members of the press, “Whether JP is – I know it’s near and dear to his heart that he wants to be there for the event, and I hope he is there,” Woods said ahead of The Open at Royal Troon. “And I hope he’s healthy and happy.

“As I said, I’ll put my hat in the ring again when I have more time and feel like I can devote myself to a Ryder Cup.”
Woods was a member of the USA team who played in the 2006 Ryder Cup at the K-Club where he says the group “had a fun week as a team. Unfortunately, we lost”.

The golfing legend hopes the team will have a fun week again, but like the rest of the country at the moment, he is hoping for good weather, he said, ” “Hopefully, it won’t be as wet as it was there.”

The decision to hold the 2027 Ryder Cup at the Adare Manor was announced in 2019, and it is believed it could be worth in the region of €160 million to the local economy.

Tiger Woods was one of the many world-class players who got to experience the Adare Manor Golf Course in all its glory at the 2022 JP McManus Pro-AA.

Many fans were given the opportunity to get photographs with their favourite celebs and have items such as caps and bags signed at the memorable event meeting horse racing legends AP McCoy, Mick Fitzgerald, Johnny Murtagh, Charlie Swan, and Ruby Walsh.

The primary purpose of the Pro-Am is to raise money for charitable organisations, mostly located in the Mid-West region of Ireland. Since its inception in 1990, the Pro-Am has helped raise over €140 million for charitable organisations in the Mid-West region of Ireland and attracts many of the world’s top players and celebrities to play the Tom Fazio-redesigned golf course.
