‘To Hell in a Handbag’,  written by Helen Norton and Jonathan White, 10-year anniversary tour comes to the Belltable stage on Thursday, September 10

To Hell in a Handbag: The Secret Lives of Canon Chasuble and Miss Prism is a 2016 play by the Irish actor/writers Helen Norton and Jonathan White.

Based on Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, now celebrating its 10th anniversary tour, ‘To Hell in a Handbag’ comes to the Belltable stage on Thursday, September 10.

To Hell in a Handbag: The Secret Lives of Canon Chasuble and Miss Prism is a 2016 play by the Irish actor/writers Helen Norton and Jonathan White. It deals with two minor characters from Oscar Wilde’s play The Importance of Being Earnest.

The subversively funny production gives a glimpse at the story behind the famous Wilfe play, exploring tales of blackmail, embezzlement and false identity, To Hell in a Handbag has enjoyed success in Ireland and the UK with sold-out runs, as well as receiving high acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The play looks at the lives of Wilde’s actors from the original production when they are not onstage, beginning with their walk “to the schools and back” in Wilde’s Act II, the audience will see how the well-educated actors survived the lower end of Victorian society and how the model citizens may not be as ethical as they perceive.

Norton and White both star in the production, with Conor Hanratty directing.

Helen Norton appeared as Ms Parker in Season 1 of Miss Scarlet and the Duke for A+E Studios in 2020 and recently wrapped filming on Season 2. She most recently appeared on stage in Druid Theatre’s production of The Cherry Orchard at The Black Box Theatre, Galway.

Other recent theatre credits include Drama at Inish directed by Cal McCrystal for The Abbey Theatre, and the remount of the highly successful The Unmanageable Sisters directed by Graham McLaren for the Abbey Theatre.

The production is presented by Once Off Productions, a production company providing a structured, supportive and creative producing platform for independent performance artists making ambitious, innovative and collaborative work.

Jonathan White most recently appeared as David Lloyd George in the highly acclaimed show The Treaty written by Colin Murphy, and directed by Jim Culleton for Fishamble Theatre Company as part of the Centenary commemorations of the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921. Jonathan previously appeared on national tour in a variety of roles in Fishamble’s production of Haughey/Gregory, also by Colin Murphy.

The production is presented by Once Off Productions, a production company providing a structured, supportive and creative producing platform for independent performance artists making ambitious, innovative and collaborative work. Working nationally and internationally at all scales, the company is committed to bringing live performance to audiences in traditional and non-traditional locations.
