‘The Year of the Hiker’ comes to the Belltable with Torch Players from March 4 – 8
Limerick theatre lovers are in for a treat as the torch Players bring their production of John B. Keane’s ‘The Year of the Hiker’ to Belltable Theatre this March 4 to 8

The Torch Players bring their staging of John B. Keane’s drama, “The Year of the Hiker,” to Limerick’s Belltable Theatre from March 4 to 8.
The John B Keane play delves into the complexities of family, abandonment, and forgiveness, promising an incredible theatrical experience for lovers of classical Irish works.
“The Year of the Hiker” tells the story of Hiker Lacey, a patriarch who mysteriously vanished from his family’s life twenty years prior.
His unexpected return, coinciding with his daughter’s wedding day, sets the stage for a dramatic unravelling of long-buried emotions.
“The Hiker tells the rather unusual story of a patriarch for reasons that will be explained, decided to one day up and leave his home, his wife, his three children, his sister-in-law – who was also living in the house – and leave and disappear for 20 years,” Torch Players PRO, Deirdre Minogue explained.
She added, “He returns after 20 years, he knows he’s dying, and he’s looking for some forgiveness, but we begin to understand why he may have left, and we begin to look at the relationships between the figure as he left, whether it sort of hung a ghost over him almost, even though he was gone for 20 years. But we see an awful lot of emotion, we see a lot of family values.”

The story of “The Year of the Hiker” masterfully shines a light on the family’s coping mechanisms and their reactions to the protagonist’s return, all told beautifully through the writing of John B. Keane.
The play delves into the lingering “ghost” of his absence, looking at how Hiker Lacey’s disappearance shaped his family over the two decades. Audiences will be in for a treat as they witness the explorations of family values and the complexities of life and human relationships.
Deirdre noted, “It’s a really interesting story, and like all John B Keane’s stories, it’s actually based on real life. This person did exist who went away for 20 years and came back. Initially, when I saw the play or read the play, I thought it seemed far-fetched, but apparently this was a done thing years ago. So we’d love you to come and see the play. It’s believed to be one of John B. Keane’s most lyrical works.”
Tickets are priced at €23 and €19, with shows staged from March 4 to 8 at the Belltable Theatre, and with strong ticket sales expected, booking early is recommended.
