Tour de Munster 2020 supporting Down Syndrome Limerick will land in Limerick Thursday, August 6
Tour de Munster 2020 to support Down Syndrome Limerick
This year marks the 20 year anniversary of the Tour de Munster – the epic 640km, 4-day charity cycle, raising vital funds for the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland, including Down Syndrome Limerick and individual beneficiaries. The Tour starts in Cork City on Thursday, August 6 and will travel through Waterford and Tipperary before landing in Limerick on Thursday evening.
This year, to celebrate the 20 year anniversary, cyclists will be treated like royalty – literally – with a stop at King John’s Castle. Down Syndrome Limerick members will provide some light refreshments at the socially distant welcome to thank the cyclists that are pedalling hard in their honour. The legendary Sean Kelly, who many will remember as ‘King Kelly’ during the height of his career, will also be participating in the Tour and joining the cyclists in King John’s Castle.
Ellen Tuffy, Chairperson of Down Syndrome Limerick said, “The Tour de Munster 2020 is a fantastic event and a very important fundraiser for us. Over 100 cyclists will travel 640km across the 6 counties of Munster over 4 days. Many of the cyclists involved have done this event for years and we consider them friends. We really appreciate their commitment to our charity and the help and support that they provide. The funds raised will go towards providing therapies to our children and adults with Down syndrome but will also help fund the PPE and Covid safety measures that are required going forward”.
Commenting ahead of August 6, Daire Heffernan, General Manager of King John’s Castle said, “We are delighted to welcome the cyclists involved in the Tour de Munster 2020 charity cycle to King John’s Castle and to the banks of the River Shannon. We have a fantastic venue here which epitomises the beauty and strength that Limerick has to offer, while also allowing participants to receive a safe and socially distant welcome. We are thrilled to be supporting a local and very worthy charity like Down Syndrome Limerick. We recognise the fantastic work that the charity does with children and adults with Down syndrome, so it is great to be able to welcome the Tour to Limerick on August 6th.”
Down Syndrome Limerick is a local charity based in Castletroy which supports children and adults with Down Syndrome. They provide essential therapies such as Speech and Language Therapy and Occupational Therapy, provide training to parents, teachers and SNAs and run adult education programmes that provide adults with Down syndrome with the necessary skills to gain meaningful employment.
