Composer Trevor Wishart comes to Dance Limerick Performance Space, St John’s Church, John’s Square in a showcase Limerick concert on Tuesday, April 22 at 7pm.
The Garden of Earthly Delights re-envisions Hieronymus Bosch’s phantasmagorical painting as a multichannel sonic wonder. Wishart is a recipient of the Golden NICA award for computer music at the Linz Ars Electronica.
The Wire magazine heralds him as “a pioneer of sonic art.” This unique concert also showcases Limerick’s important contributions to electronic and electroacoustic music. The opening set features Paddy Mulcahy (Sony Music), Neil O Connor (Ordnance Survey), Hugh Clery Ward, and Robin Parmar (Silent Records).
Doors open at 7pm and admission is only €10 (€5 concession) via Eventbrite. This event is made possible by the Digital Media & Arts Research Centre (DMARC) at the University of Limerick with the kind support of Dance Limerick.
Trevor Wishart (born 1946) is an English composer who has pioneered electronic techniques, primarily for the voice. Since the early 1970s he has been active as a composer and developer for software tools such as the Composers’ Desktop Project. His two books, On Sonic Art and Audible Design are definitive works in the field.
Wishart describes The Garden of Earthly Delights as likely the final work of his illustrious career. Composed for eight speakers, this “comic opera” explores our contemporary situation by traversing a maze of human predicaments. The material transforms the voices of actors and politicians alongside a choir. Organisers said, “In 2008, Wishart presented his composition Imago in Limerick, so this is a reunion of sorts, and we are very happy to have him return.”
