Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI) congratulates Technological University Shannon (TUS) and Thomond College, Limerick for partnering for the past 20 years to deliver the ‘Skills at Work’ programme and the recent ‘World of Work’ programme to 2nd year students. Over this time, this partnership between TUS and Thomond College has benefited over 600 students.

The nationwide World of Work programme provides industry insights to 2nd year DEIS students through corporate volunteers from a local company. The volunteers share their career experiences, overview of their daily duties and tasks and host a site visit to their company. The TUS volunteers showcased a variety of roles from its campus from administration, marketing, sports and sustainability.

Maura Murphy, Education Regional Coordinator, said, “We applaud TUS for their ongoing commitment to this partnership with Thomond College. Both institutions have evolved significantly over the years from expansion to rebrands but the endurance of this partnership and programme is a testament to their unwavering commitment to supporting the local community which experiences a high level of disadvantage.”

Declan Fitzgerald, Acting Principal of Thomond College, said, “Our students have benefited greatly from this programme, which has encouraged them to access further education, raised their career aspirations and enhanced their understanding of the wide range of jobs available within the world of work. We are grateful to TUS for their ongoing commitment and partnership with us. This connection has helped remove barriers to opportunity and inspire and motivate pupils in their career choices. Together, we are investing in the next generation of talent, skills and workforce readiness for Ireland’s future.

President of TUS, Professor Vincent Cunnane, said, “At TUS, we are incredibly proud to celebrate 20 years of partnership with Business in the Community Ireland and Thomond Community College.  Our partnership is one of only 10 to reach this two-decade milestone. What started in 2005 as a commitment to educational inclusion has blossomed into an enduring collaboration that has empowered 645 students across our regions.

“True community impact requires showing up, year after year, and I have seen first-hand the profound difference these programmes make in giving young people the confidence to see a place for themselves in higher education and the professional world. We celebrate this two-decade milestone and look forward to continuing our shared mission of transforming lives through education.”
