Last week, celebrations took place on the TUS Coonagh Campus as the new Applied Psychology degree marked a major milestone—the very first cohort of final-year Applied Psychology students in Limerick.

Course leader Dr. Lisa O’Rourke Scott said, “We are a multidisciplinary team that has worked incredibly hard over the last few years to get this course up and running. We are so proud of how popular it has become and of how amazing our students are.”

To mark the occasion, Dr. Sharon Lambert, President-Elect of the Psychological Society of Ireland, delivered a keynote address entitled “Psychology in Challenging Times.” In her speech, she quoted former President Michael D. Higgins, who asked, “What is the point of universities unless the accumulated knowledge, insight, and vision are put to the service of the community?” She praised the role of universities in helping to “re-imagine the world as it ought to be.”

Reflecting on the programme’s progress, Dr. O’Rourke Scott noted, “The applied ethos of our degree is one we take very seriously, and we put a strong emphasis on active learning and activities. We also work closely with community groups and employers across Limerick and beyond.

The event welcomed students and staff from the Applied Psychology programme on both the Limerick and Athlone campuses, along with faculty leadership

“We now have our first full cohort spanning all four years of the new Psychology degree and will soon be undergoing accreditation by the Psychological Society of Ireland. It seemed the perfect occasion to host a launch event to showcase our students’ work to the PSI President, as well as to staff, students, and colleagues from across all TUS campuses.”

The event welcomed students and staff from the Applied Psychology programme on both the Limerick and Athlone campuses, along with faculty leadership. A highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of awards for fourth-year research projects. Harriet Slattery received the Social Science ConneXions Award, while Amy Lynch was honoured with the Student Choice Award.

“We will be sad to see our fourth years graduate, as they have been trailblazers in every possible way,” Dr. O’Rourke Scott added.

“But we are excited to see where they go next, and we all feel incredibly lucky to work with such excellent students on such an exciting and versatile degree.”
