TUS has been awarded the Silver Smarter Travel Mark for promoting sustainable and active travel across all campuses
TUS has been awarded the Silver Smarter Travel Mark, a distinction that recognises its strong and ongoing commitment to promoting sustainable and active travel across all campuses.
The third-level institution believes the award reflects the combined efforts of staff and students, who continue to embrace cleaner, healthier and more environmentally friendly ways of travelling.
In a statement, the technological university extended our thanks to the National Transport Authority’s Smarter Travel Office for its support, guidance and continued partnership throughout the process, saying that “their expertise has played a vital role in helping TUS advance a more sustainable travel culture.”

Receiving the Silver Mark is an important milestone for the university and reaffirms their dedication to further strengthening its smarter travel initiatives as they continue to build on this progress.
TUS carried out a number of initiatives which helped achieve the Silver Mark including Active travel engagement, promoting articipation in Healthy Campus initiatives such as Marchathon, Walktober and lunchtime walks, encouraging students and staff to incorporate more walking into their daily routine; sustainable travel communications through regular promotion of alternative travel options through campus-wide emails, digital screens, and dedicated updates on the TUS website; and improved on-site facilities through enhancements such as a secure bike shed, campus EV charging points, and access to changing rooms and showers to support active and sustainable travel.
They also promoted Carpooling through the introduction of dedicated carpooling parking spaces for staff to encourage shared commuting and reduce single-occupancy car use; as well as cycling supports through the availability of the Bike to Work Scheme, regular bike-mechanic drop-in days, promotion of the Light Up Your Bike safety initiative, and the distribution of free bike lights to students and staff.
Jimmy Browne, Chief Operations Officer, said, “This achievement is a testament to the university’s commitment to sustainability in every aspect of our operations. We are proud of the collective effort across all campuses to make smarter, cleaner and healthier travel choices part of everyday life at TUS.”
Katie Hennessy, Smarter Travel Co-ordinator, said, “The Silver Smarter Travel Mark reflects the hard work of our staff and students over the past number of years. We’ve made real progress in encouraging active and sustainable travel, and we’re excited to continue working with the NTA to reach even higher standards in the future.”
