Tutorial College is continuing a family legacy with more than 40 years of providing tailored senior cycle education for students in Limerick and the MidWest

Tutorial College in Limerick City Centre has been providing tailored senior cycle education for Leaving Certificate students in Limerick and the MidWest for more than four decades.

Founded by John and Margaret O’Halloran in the late 1980s, the college is now run by the next generation, his son John O’Halloran Jr and his wife Fiona, who are continuing the family legacy of providing the highest level of senior cycle education, maintaining a focus on helping every student achieve the best possible Leaving Certificate results.

Speaking about what sets them apart from mainstream education, John O’Halloran Jr said, “We start in senior cycle. So what we do offer is full-time fifth-year and sixth-year. Some people come to us just for their final year in sixth year, and some people will come in and repeat with us. And our whole emphasis is to try and get the best possible Leaving Cert for each student.”

Using a bespoke education model, each student receives an individual study plan following a meeting with their parents, with progress monitored throughout the year, making sure every student has the best possible opportunity to reach their potential.

“Before each student joins us, I meet with the student and one or both parents,” John explains, continuing, “Every student gets an individual study plan. And then as we’re going through the year, we’re keeping track of how each student is progressing so that if we need to change things for that student, we’ll do that as we go along.”

Fiona O’Halloran, Deputy Principal, believes every student is different and that requires an individual approach.

She said, “ Every student that comes here is special. They have their unique quirks, and they have their unique strengths. We really mind them like our own. There’s a place for everybody, and a lot of students who come here just need a new structure, they might need a fresh start for different reasons, they also just need encouragement. And once they get that, once they’re treated like an adult, they thrive.”

Staff say the personalised approach allows students to receive additional help in subjects where they need it most, while encouraging confidence and independence.

Showing their own faith in the school, the Principal and Deputy Principal have had their personal experiences with Tutorial College’s system, Fiona explained, “John has come through the school, his sisters and brother. Our children have come through. You’re teaching them how to study. You’re giving them confidence. You’re also giving them life skills, how to cope with tough situations, how to deal with it, but everybody’s here in their corner, and I think they get that and they understand that.”

Tutorial College concerns itself with the total development of each individual student, caring for him/her in living and growing as much as in study and learning. Beyond exam preparation, the college also maintains strategic relationships with universities and institutes of education and technology across Ireland, Europe, and beyond. This commitment to building academic connections further enriches students’ opportunities and broadens their educational prospects.

John believes the most gratifying part of the work for them, is meeting students later in life and seeing how their journey has gone, he said, “ Meeting students later on; the day of the results is usually fantastic for the majority of students, but it’s actually later in life, running into students who have been here in the past with us, and to see them doing well, that to me is special. That, to me, is brilliant!”

As well as offering full-time education, Tutorial College offers a range of revision courses and grinds designed to support part-time students preparing for both Leaving and Junior Certificate exams.
