Twilight Tango promises an enchanting evening at The People’s Museum of Limerick as part of April’s Twilight Thursdays

Twilight Tango is promising an evening of enchantment set within the historic surroundings of The People’s Museum of Limerick as part of Twilight Thursdays on April 30.

Headlining the night are world-renowned Argentine tango dancers Victoria Fuentes and Lucas Galera, whose breathtaking connection, emotional depth, and artistry bring the soul of tango vividly to life. Accompanying them is Limerick-born pianist Mark P O’Connor, whose expressive playing weaves a rich and evocative musical landscape, and  Alice Abreu on violin.

The María Victoria Fuentes & Lucas Galera artistic project began in 2016 and has been based in Italy since 2018. They have been part of the teaching staff at “A.S.D. Mariana Montes Tango Club” (Cagliari), “ART: Accademia Romana del Tango” (Rome), “La Gardel di Roma” (Rome), and “El Tango del Centro” (Teramo, Abruzzo).

They are regularly invited by the schools “Le Flueve Tango” (Lausanne, Switzerland), “TNT Lyon Tango” (Lyon, France), and “Cultura Tango asd” (Padua, Italy) to share their teaching method. They have served on the juries at various venues of the “Campeonato Italiano Metropolitano de Tango” and the European Tango Metropolitani Italia / European Tango Cup.

Over the years, they have been invited to various international festivals such as “Tango to Rome, ” “Roma Tango Festival, ” and “Roma Tango Fiesta” (Rome, Italy), “Catania Summer Tango Week” (Catania, Italy), and “Planetango Winter Festival” (Moscow, Russia). Since 2023, they have been part of the staff of “Xsiempre Tango” (Sardinia), where they regularly teach classes in the cities of Olbia and Nuoro and organise community events such as “Nur Milonga” (Nuoro), “Tarranova Practice, ” and “Olbia Tango Bar” (Olbia).

These dancers, teachers, judges, directors, and coaches are known for their professionalism, knowledge, and effective teaching methods. They are characterised by their approach to transmitting the different styles of Argentine tango, drawing on the history, memory, and culture of tango. Students refer to them as “powerful masters.

The ‘Tango at Twilight’ event will present a story woven through the golden age of Tango, told through narration, music and dance, and promises to be a special treat for a Limerick audience.

“The method they apply is based on individual technique and Partner tango classes, based on the roots of this dance, focusing on the embrace, the connection, and dancing through the other person. Their concepts have almost always had a historical basis, indicating the “how” and “why” of the movements, collaborating with each student’s personal exploration on their tango journey.  

Alice is a violinist/musician based between Ireland and Portugal, working across classical, jazz and experimental music scenes (mainly). She finished her Bachelor’s at ESMAE (Porto Music University) in 2020, and completed her Master’s in 2024 through the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the Irish World Academy. She has been steadily building a path that weaves together performance, teaching, composing, and community-focused work.

Actor, director and musician Mark P O’Connor is a Limerick based artist.  This is his 8th time performing for the Limerick at Night Twilight Thursday initiative.  Previous events include rehearsed readings, plays and music performances, most recently a reading of the ‘contemporary Australian masterpiece’ play ‘Bondi Dreaming’ with playwright Sam Atwell (Trimoon films) and David Michael Scott (Lir Academy).

The ‘Tango at Twilight’ event will present a story woven through the golden age of Tango, told through narration, music and dance, and promises to be a special treat for a Limerick audience.

Richard is a presenter, producer, songwriter and actor. He was named the Limerick Person of the Year (2011) and won an online award at the Metro Éireann Media and Multicultural Awards (2011) for promoting multi-culturalism online. Richard says that the ilovelimerick.com concept is very much a community driven project that aims to document life in Limerick. So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
