A group of ten staff members from the University Hospital Limerick oncology ward have this month been taking part in the ‘Marathon in a Month’ fundraiser for the Irish Cancer Society. ‘Marathon in a Month’ was organised by the Irish Cancer Society with the idea of it being a marathon for all abilities to complete at their own pace over the course of a month, while raising much-needed funds for their vital services.

Ten nurses and care assistants from UHL have pledged to cover the distance of 420km between them this month, a marathon each, and have so far raised €3600 for the Irish Cancer Society. As frontline healthcare workers, they witness first-hand the realities of a patient living with cancer, and they understand the importance of the Irish Cancer Society and the services that they provide to cancer patients, wanting to help in any way they can.

Covid-19 has had a significant impact on the Irish Cancer Society, with annual fundraisers such as Daffodil Day being cancelled, a day that usually sees about €4 million raised. It has created difficulty for patients accessing services, but the Irish Cancer Society has made sure to provide as many of their services as possible to those patients in need, whilst keeping them safely cocooned at home. Financial support is needed so that they can continue their life-changing services as Covid-19 remains in circulation. UHL Marathon in a Month

‘Marathon in a Month’ allows for fundraising to continue safely, as participants can complete a marathon in their own space and at their own pace, over the course of a month. It gives everyone the opportunity of completing a marathon, while supporting the Irish Cancer Society and doing their bit to help those in need.

Seraphina Kiely, UHL nurse and fundraiser participant, said, “As nurses, we know the importance of exercise for physical and mental health, so this fundraiser is a good way for us to take care of ourselves and raise funds for our patients. Our patients are ordinary people who have the strength to persevere and endure in the most difficult circumstances, heroes. So we would be most grateful for any donation people could give and we would like to thank the generosity of all who have donated to our team so far.”
