Limerick Celebrates Ukraine Independence Day 2026 with evening of culture, music and community
The Ukrainian community and the people of Limerick join together to celebrate Ukraine Independence Day 2026
The Ukrainian community and the people of Limerick joined together to celebrate Ukraine Independence Day at The Crescent, O’ Connell Avenue on Monday, August 24.
The event marked the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence and celebrated Ukrainian culture, heritage, and traditions.
The programme for the 2026 celebrations included performances by Ukrainian singers and musicians now living in Limerick, children’s activities and opportunities for the wider community to learn more about Ukrainian culture.

Since 2022, Limerick has become home to many Ukrainian individuals and families. The event aimed to give the opportunity to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day and bring people together in a welcoming community setting.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran commented, “It is tough for all of us in Limerick to see the suffering the people of Ukraine go through daily as a result of Russia’s illegal occupation of Ukrainian territory. Ukraine Independence Day is an opportunity for us to show our support to our Ukrainian friends and remember those who have given their lives to that struggle and their families.
“Since 2022, Limerick has welcomed many Ukrainian individuals and families who have become valued members of our communities, our workplaces and our schools. This event is also a chance for all of us to come together, celebrate diversity and recognise the positive contribution that Ukrainians have made to life across Limerick City and County.”
Príomh Chomhairleoir at Limerick City and County Council, Cllr. Tom Ruddle noted Limerick has been “at its best when communities come together”.
He said, “This celebration reflects the warmth and support shown by people across the city and county in welcoming those who arrived here from Ukraine. It is also an opportunity to share traditions, music and culture, while strengthening the friendships and connections that have developed over the past number of years.”
Director General at Limerick City and County Council, Dr. Pat Daly said, “Since the arrival of Ukrainian families to Limerick, Council staff have played an important role in supporting individuals and communities as they settled into their new surroundings.
“Across many different services, staff have worked with dedication, compassion and professionalism to help people access supports, build connections and establish a sense of belonging.
“I want to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of our teams, our partner agencies and the wider community, whose collective commitment has helped make Limerick a welcoming place for those displaced by war. This event is both a celebration of Ukrainian independence and a recognition of the strong relationships that have been built between our communities.”
