The celebration events offer a large programme of activities which are open to all ages

Communities and individuals across the Ballyhoura area are invited to join Ballyhoura Development CLG in celebrating Ukraine Independence Day at the Friar’s Gate Theatre in Kilmallock on August 24th, 2024.

This fun-filled event aims to bring together local and Ukrainian communities in a day filled with fun, culture, and unity, open to everyone regardless of nationality.

The celebration events offer a large programme of activities which are open to all ages, kicking off with children’s activities from 11 AM to 1:30 PM on Saturday, August 24, including a mini disco hosted by Mickey Mouse and a big bubble show. These activities will be led by an animator fluent in Ukrainian, Russian, and English, ensuring an inclusive experience for everyone in attendance.

From 2 PM a Ukrainian Art Exhibition will open, putting the creativity among the Ukrainian community living in Ireland on display. This exhibition will be on display throughout August at the theatre as the art hopes to create community connections and cultural appreciation it will also highlight the diverse contributions of Ukrainian artists to the local community.

The day will conclude with a screening of the Ukrainian animated film “Mavka” from 3:15 PM to 5 PM and will include English subtitles giving all attendees the chance to experience Ukrainian folklore.

Eileen O’Keeffe, Manager at Ballyhoura Development CLG, shares her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “Ballyhoura Development is delighted to support this event which is for everyone living and working in the Ballyhoura region. It is a celebration of diversity, inclusion, and unity. Ukrainians and migrants in general living across the area add to the uniqueness and diversity that makes the Ballyhoura region a great place to live.”  

The event is free of charge, but registration is essential due to limited places. Interested participants can register through the Ballyhoura Development website.

Richard is a presenter, producer, songwriter and actor. He was named the Limerick Person of the Year (2011) and won an online award at the Metro Éireann Media and Multicultural Awards (2011) for promoting multi-culturalism online. Richard says that the ilovelimerick.com concept is very much a community driven project that aims to document life in Limerick. So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
