The article which landed him his nomination starts off with Mostafa researching an award-winning series on deaths of people in Direct Provision, only to then discover that one of those who passed away in October 2020, was an American. His name was Thomas Stofiel, and in 2017 he had been wanted by the FBI after disappearing with his young daughter.

When Mostafa and Noel teamed up and further looked into his past, it opened up a strange and shocking story.

The duo, over the course of several months, tracked the man’s whereabouts in a timeline spanning three years, beginning in Oregon, USA.

The Egyptian-born journalist completed his master’s degree in Journalism at UL in 2021 and has since amassed much national recognition for his work in the last three years.

This nomination is Mostafa Darwish’s second in two years, with the last nomination leading to a win in the ‘Investigative Journalism’ category for his investigation into the deaths of those living in Direct Provision.

UL Alumnus Mostafa Darwish was also awarded Ireland’s Student Journalist of the year in Ireland’s national media awards for two consecutive years in a row.

In 2019, Darwish was awarded the Thomson Foundation’s mobile journalism competition, for his report on Egypt’s fare increases to an already inadequate train system.

Since beginning his career, the 31-year-old has covered major news events in Egypt for both local newspapers as well as international news agencies including the Associated Press.

As a freelance multimedia journalist, Darwish has worked on more than 160 stories since 2015.

Most recently, Mostafa is working full-time for the Irish Times group, he is also covering migrants’ issues in Ireland publishing for Euro News, Middle East Eye and The Associated Press and is working on some guest lecturing for Griffith College Dublin and International Centre for Journalists. Mostafa Darwish is currently based in Europe.
