Double achievement for All-Ireland winning UL Bohs Women’s Rugby Team is celebrated

UL Bohs Women’s side delivered a historic double, defeating Railway Union in both the league and cup finals
A proud tradition of rugby excellence was celebrated at University of Limerick as UL Bohemians Senior Women’s Rugby team, recently crowned Energia All-Ireland League and All-Ireland Cup Champions for 2024, gathered for a special reception.
In an incredible season under head coach Fiona Hayes, the UL Bohs women’s side delivered a historic double, defeating Railway Union in both the league and cup finals and cementing their place in the spotlight.
Players, coaching staff, club leadership, UL Sport, and representatives from across the university gathered at Plassey House in an acknowledgement of the team’s remarkable achievement and celebrate the deep-rooted connection between UL and UL Bohemians RFC.

Speaking at the reception, Acting President Professor Kilcommins praised the players’ commitment, resilience, and legacy.
“To achieve a double, winning both the league and the cup is a phenomenal achievement. That’s something that can never be taken away. It’s done. It’s yours. That achievement will always stand.
“You’ve shown courage, dedication, and excellence in everything you do. And you’ve done it while representing your club and your communities with pride. You are ambassadors for women’s sport in Ireland, and that visibility really matters.”
Professor Kilcommins also acknowledged the historical significance of the club’s continued success, with this year marking UL Bohs’ 14th All-Ireland League title.
UL Bohs Senior Vice President Alan Ward also paid tribute to the team and to the ongoing partnership between the club and the university.
“Winning both the All-Ireland League and the Cup in the same season is no small feat. It speaks volumes about the commitment, the talent, the culture, and the demanding work of the players and coaches.
“You are incredible ambassadors, not just for the club, but for women’s rugby, for UL, and for your communities. The support from UL, whether through scholarships, access to facilities, or receptions like this makes a real difference. We’re deeply grateful for that.”
Director of Women’s Rugby with UL Bohs, and UL alum, Fiona Reidy echoed those sentiments.
“To win both the All-Ireland League and the Cup in the same year is a remarkable achievement. The women standing here today have trained through wind, rain, injury, and exams. They’ve pushed themselves, played with heart, and inspired the next generation of girls in rugby with their performances. And they’ve done it all with humility, integrity, and pride.”
Among the players honoured was UL Sports Scholar Laoise McGonagle, a third-year PE and English student from Donegal, who spoke about the experience of balancing elite sport with her studies.
“Winning the league and the cup, you just can’t beat it. It’s been so special to be part of a group that’s so close, both on and off the pitch. The scholarship support has been a massive help, and we’re so lucky to have the link between UL and UL Bohs, it makes all the difference.
“Receptions like this, being recognised here in Plassey House, really show how much sport is valued at UL, and it means a lot.”
With four UL Sports Scholars among the playing squad including Kate Flannery, Jane Clohessy and Beth Buttimer, and more UL students like rising star Caitriona Finn actively involved, the connection between the university and club continues to flourish, fuelled by shared values, a proud sporting tradition, and strong support structures across sport.
The reception was a fitting tribute to a season to remember that was built on commitment, community, and championship success and a clear signal of UL’s pride in its female student-athletes and their achievements on the national stage.
