Speaking about the initiative Dr Fitzgerald said: “Christmas is a particularly demanding time for many charities, as they are often the only lifeline for projects such as those supporting the elderly and the homeless and the demands can be even greater at this time of year.  We were heartened to receive a large number of nominations from the campus community. In total, over 300 of our community submitted nominations for 53 charities.”

“It is my hope that for Christmas 2018, we will extend the voting to our Alumni as well, so that we may involve them in this outreach initiative and also support projects in which our alumni are active,” continued Dr Fitzgerald.

The grant cheques were presented to the charities at a UL Christmas Community Celebration to which the entire community was invited.

Some of the recipients of the UL Christmas Community Celebration donation include ADAPT Domestic Abuse Services which is a voluntary organisation which was set up in 1974 to provide a wide range of supports to women survivors of domestic abuse and their children across Limerick City and County.

Another recipient of the grants is Cliona’s Foundation is a Limerick-based charity that provides financial assistance directly to parents of children with life-limiting or chronic complex care needs across Ireland to help with the non-medical expenses related to caring for their child.
