ULs PGA golf academy granted planning permission

The University of Limerick is set to become the home of future Irish golf stars. UL has €2.5m plans for a PGA accredited golf academy upon being granted planning permission. The academy will combine teaching, research and recreation into golf. The development was granted by Limerick City and County Council.ULs PGA golf academy 

The University has received a licence from the PGA to run the academy. The academy aims to be about both theory and practice. The academy is an initiative of the Biomechanics Research Unit, Department of Physical Education and Sports Science, and the Professional Golfers’ Association.

The aim of the development of the academy is to provide a venue for teaching, research and recreation into golf.  The University will also be offering a new Masters of Science in Sports Performance with a golf specialisation.

Golf, biomechanics, golf psychology, and golf coaching research are proposed to be facilitated. The academy will also provide recreational golf, golf coaching and golf practice for both the public and the university.  There will be qualified coaches on hand to help people improve participant’s game.

The academy will be located on the south-side of the campus, close to the existing Boathouse, and a 54-page environmental impact assessment report was submitted as part of its application.

Plans are said to include a single storey, PGA- accredited golf academy building, incorporating 19 covered driving range bays, two teaching bays, two manufactured bays, and other associated works.  Plans also include an outfield area 150m wide and 300m long, a putting green, a pitching area, a chipping green and a chipping area, with perimeter call catch nets and associated landscaping. The University of Limerick visited the Belfry Golf Academy in Birmingham as part of their research into developing the academy.

Director of sports at the University of Limerick, Dave Mahedy feels that the academy will be a great facility not just for the university and Limerick, but the wider Mid-West region.
