I love Limerick. Although, as a student, it can just be seen as a place where the 304 bus into town is always annoyingly late or every house seems to become an ice box once it hits midnight, or 9AM lectures seem about five hours long as you attempt to rehydrate yourself while suffering from the dreaded “Fear” as a result of your drunken antics from the night before, it also has many great points. The city itself is beautiful, especially down by the riverside, with a bustling atmosphere about the place. However, there are specific parts of the city and the surrounding areas that I personally love.

After growing up in a small countryside town, the move to Limerick city to attend the University of Limerick was extremely daunting. Walking through the streets for the first time, I felt like a tiny fish in an incredibly large pond, completely overwhelmed by the amount of people and cars passing by me in a blur. It took a while for me to get used to being in such a different place to home, and luckily for me, just as it was all getting too much, I discovered the pontoon on campus. While exploring one of the many pathways the campus has to offer, I pretty much stumbled upon it, and it has been my favourite place to go ever since. The pontoon is literally just a large floating mass the kayakers use to get into the river, but for me it’s a place to go when I’m stressed, or overthinking, or just a bit homesick. The calmness of the water flowing by and the beautiful scenery, especially at sunset, could never bore me!

Of course, nightlife is a pretty massive part of being a student. From quiet nights spent at Stables, to crazy nights in the city itself, Limerick has a lot to offer. Like many others my age, I had nearly always ended up in Angel Lane, until I discovered Costello’s. Possibly the warmest place I’ve ever been, the people are always friendly and interesting, and each night I spend there just gets better and better. However, as I mentioned before, Stables is always a good shout. I’ve had countless nights in there with friends, and I know that when I’m old and grey and look back on my college days, Stables will be a huge contributor to some of the best memories I’ll have from my time at UL.

Finally, strolling alongside the riverbank in the city centre is another one of my favourite parts of the amazing Limerick. Only in my second year, I’ve already created some special memories along here; from chatting and laughing with my friends, to first dates, to just sitting there alone on a cold bench admiring the view, it truly is something special. The timelessness and energy of the river, bridges and buildings never ceases to amaze me. The sounds and sights of a busy city shouldn’t go so beautifully with the ebb and flow of a river in my opinion, but Limerick just somehow makes it work.

All in all, it’s safe to say Limerick has stolen my heart in the short space of time I’ve lived there. There’s so much more I could say that I love about the city; the Milk Market, the quirky shops that are just waiting to be found, the musicians that line the streets, the different museums that I can spend hours immersed in. However, what excites me most about the incredible Limerick city is knowing there’s so much more for me to discover and explore.
