The UNMASKED Group Exhibition is a painting exhibition that features five emerging artists. It is being hosted by The People’s Museum of Limerick at 2 Pery Square. The opening night was October 1, and the show will carry through till Thursday, October 8, with the regular opening times of the museum. Admission is free.

Skills encompassing a classical painter, Robert Downey give his work a modern touch. Heavily textured and layered with the impression of the changing tides of society and how hostile world events are fed to us has compelled him to show us how it has impacted his art. He amplifies how distracted and divided our society has become and how social media creeps into our perceptions of reality and subsequently his own artwork.
Abstract Landscapes feel like a vague way to describe Patrick Critchley’s artwork. But once you stare into the dark plains of his work, you feel the mood he stained this rugged Irish landscape with. His work reminds us of how disconnected we have become from the beautiful landscapes around us that carry our history, and that we have moved into concrete jungles which entrap not only us, but our emotions too.
The ominous mood of James Leane’s paintings is filled with emotions many of us can relate to. The isolated figures abstracted and trapped, masked, yet filled with anxiety, depression and despair. He can bring these paintings filled with such emotions with fine detail or loose abstract brushwork. From the most textured works to clean flat surfaces, James’ work is easily recognizable and stands out from many avant-garde art of today.
Stephan Hartigan’s work takes inspiration from the mundane, finding beauty and intrigue in the honest, sometimes uncomfortable or sorrowful moments in life. Using paint to find one’s true form, both the artist and the subject he yearns for the viewer to face reality, the not always ubiquitous human behaviour. Using dark ambiguous colours contrasted with bright shades of pink, he’s paintings pull you in and force you to look into your subconscious.
Bonnie Hickey’s work is an exploration of memory, movement and identity. She draws inspiration from her family background/culture and aims to express the feeling or energy being created by the way the body moves when boxing, how controlled but spontaneous it is. She is interested in the mechanics of how paint can be used as a tool by building it up or flowing and contracting it’s as much about control as it is about chance, working with the movements and what’s in front of you. The unpredictability of the ink against the controlled static acrylic or blotchy bleach to depict a dangerous, free-flowing power being created in a fight.
