Villiers School grounds were filled with sunshine, laughter, and community spirit on Sunday, May 11, as the school opened its gates to the wider community for the much-loved Annual Garden Fete, proving once again a highlight of the Limerick community calendar.

Organised by the Villiers School Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), the Annual Garden Fete offers something for everyone, from delicious barbecued food to sweet crepes, and children’s games to a number of stalls. Visitors had the opportunity to browse books, pick up plants, and snap up second-hand uniforms, as well as taking part in a raffle offering a number of prizes.

All funds raised on the day will go directly to the redevelopment of the school’s hockey pitch which will be a benefit to both the Villiers students and to the wider Limerick hockey community.

Head of School Jill Storey praised the inclusive atmosphere the Annual Garden Fete always brings, saying, “ It’s a really nice opportunity to bring together the various branches of what we call the Villiers family. So many people are coming together today and there is lots for people to do.”

Among the draws for people, Miss Storey said, were the various bric-a-brac stalls, activities, and the ever-popular dog show, with the School Head noting, “ Our canine friends are here and we have lots of fun categories and competition entries taking place.”

The Villiers Dog Show includes categories ranging from ‘Best Small Dog’ to ‘Best Dog Led by a Child’, four-legged friends stole the show. Another standout moment was the inaugural Villiers Bake-Off competition, adding an exciting new dimension to the festivities. Throughout the day, talented Villiers students also showcased their musical abilities with live outdoor performances.

Dearbhla Acheson, speaking on behalf of the PTA, reflected on the day’s success, saying, “ This year the PTA are delighted to sponsor the upgrading of our hockey pitch. Hockey is a very integral sport here at Villiers, and many of our students play it from first year all the way to sixth year. It is also a wonderful community amenity, which is used by the Limerick Hockey Club and other clubs. The PTA are delighted to sponsor and support any improvements in initiatives in the school, but especially the hockey pitch.”

“Our Annual Garden Fête is not just a fundraiser but a celebration of community, both within the school, and in the wider sense,” said Dearbhla.
