Villiers School proudly announce the official opening of its newly developed, International Hockey Federation (FIH)-certified hockey pitch, a significant investment in the school’s sporting facilities and a major milestone in its ongoing commitment to student development and wellbeing.

This development represents a major investment in sport at Villiers School and underlines the school’s dedication to providing outstanding opportunities for its students. Hockey has long been a core part of the school’s sporting tradition, and the new pitch further strengthens coaching programmes, competitive performance, and participation at all levels.

This project was funded partly through Sports Capital grant funding, fundraising through the Parent-Teacher Association, and generous donations from members of the school community. This investment reflects Villiers School’s continued commitment to investing in high-quality facilities that support both athletic and personal development. The new pitch will play a central role in expanding participation in hockey, supporting competitive success, and fostering a lifelong enjoyment of sport among students.

The official launch event for the renewed pitch took place on 16th April 2026, and coincided with the annual past pupils’ hockey matches.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Head of School Jill Storey, said, “This new hockey pitch represents a significant step forward for our school community. Sport plays a vital role in the holistic development of our students, teaching teamwork, resilience, and leadership. Beyond the school community, the pitch enhances Villiers School’s ability to host high-quality fixtures and tournaments. It opens the door to wider future collaboration with clubs, schools, and governing bodies, supporting the growth of hockey locally and nationally.”

Villiers was delighted to be able to showcase the new pitch in October 2025 by hosting the Irish Schoolboys’ tournament for the third time.  The Irish Schoolboys’ tournament is a significant event in the hockey calendar, bringing together top-performing teams from all corners of Ireland. Villiers had previously hosted this tournament in 1987 and 2008.

The redeveloped hockey pitch is also home to Limerick Hockey Club, a collaboration which ensures that this new hockey pitch is now regularly being utilised and enjoyed by players and their coaches at both school and club level.

The new pitch has been awarded FIH Category 3 certification, confirming that it meets internationally recognised standards for quality, safety, and performance, indicating that the pitch is suitable for both local- and national-level competitions, high-performance training, and structured player development programmes. Achieving this status ensures that the sporting facilities at Villiers School align with global best practice in hockey infrastructure.
