Virtu, an exhibition by Limerick School of Art and Design and the Hunt Museum

During six weeks, the Hunt Museum will be hosting the co-curated exhibition Virtu. Officially opening on 7th April, the exhibition will continue until May the 21st. Virtu will explore the ongoing relationship between the Museum and LSAD.  The exhibition includes contemporary artists working in various disciplines and a collection of drawings from several collections including IMMA, Limerick City Gallery and the University of Limerick.

A significant factor at the core of the Museum’s activities over the last twenty years has been its long-standing relationship with the Limerick School of Art and Design. Beginning in 1997, when the then Director of the Museum, John Hunt Jnr., invited 2nd and 3rd year painting students to create artworks inspired by the Hunt Collection, this relationship has continued over the years to spark creative and insightful responses by LSAD’s students. This year, to celebrate both twenty years in the Custom House and the partnership with LSAD, we are delighted to present a co-curated exhibition by the Hunt and the school’s painting department.

Virtu consists of two layers: the first celebrates the art institution itself as a hub for education, discourse and inspiration. Here we will see artworks from national and public collections, including the Hunt Museum, The Limerick City Gallery of Art, the University of Limerick and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. The second aspect of Virtu celebrates the work of contemporary artists, as through their ever-evolving creativity and innovation they too continue to inspire and engage the artists of tomorrow. Featured will be works by seventeen Irish and international contemporary artists working in various disciplines; many of whom have an association with both LSAD and the Hunt Museum. These two strands of the exhibition, presented side by side, will allow visitors to explore the relevance of museums and their collections and the desire for continuous debate. The opening will take place on Friday 7th of April at 6 pm, and the exhibition will be running until Sunday 21th of May in the Temporary Exhibition Gallery and around the Museum.

Also opening on the 7th April is the LSAD annual 2nd Year Paint Students exhibition. The second year painting students were asked to create a work of art inspired by the Hunt Collection. Now, celebrating its twentieth year, this annual show has become one of the most popular exhibitions in our annual programme. These works sit side by side with original artefacts and add a new life and vitality to the historic collection.
