Spaces preserved within nature where people gather or just pass through have existed for millennia and beyond. We see them today in our cities, towns, public spaces, and in rural settings, where the DNA of generations preside over the land.
Curated by Limerick’s Maurice Quilinan, the paintings here are intimate reflections of the essence of place, as experienced by three different artists, exploring these special gathering places within our urban and rural landscapes.
Shape, texture and colour communicate in a playful and organic way, layered with traces of man’s presence, then and now, leaving marks behind demonstrating the brevity of our existence.
These diverse works encourage people to question what they see in each creation, as well as to understand the triangular link between the art, the artist and the viewer.
The three artists come to Limerick from different parts of Ireland, based in Co.Kilkenny, Vicki O’Donoghue is captivated by the essence of the land, its smells, sights, sounds, history, and legend, her curiosity fuels a passion to intuitively bring it to life through abstract visual storytelling, using oils, cold wax and mixed media.
Based in Co. Clare and having graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design, Olivia Henchy’s work is at the intersection between landscape and abstraction. She takes inspiration from the landscape around her, starting with a mark, a form, a layer and building up. Her curiosity lies in expressing an emotive sensory experience of the land through an exploration of colour, shape and texture.
Waterford’s Teresa Fitzgerald thrives on the freedom of expression through abstract art, allowing herself to find a place where she feels utterly childlike, this is what makes each day magical when she paints.
Visitare runs at Limerick Museum, Henry Street from August 8 to August 31
