Visual Limerick provides a window to showcase creativity around the City and County

By ILoveLimerick correspondent Eimear Kelly

You may have noticed, in the last few months, that there have been some eye-catching and impressive displays of artwork all around the city, as well as in surrounding towns and villages such as Killmallock, Newcastle West, and others. Visual Limerick is the driving force behind this new initiative which shows the creativity that Limerick City and County has to offer.

Visual Limerick is an initiative set up by Phyl Guerin to showcase the artistic outputs from the third level colleges and start-up enterprises around Limerick. The idea, as described by Phyl is to ’show and tell what’s emanating from the education sector in the region and advance the visual experience of the city and county.’ The main aim is to inspire all people, young and old, to step out of their comfort zone to try and experience new things.

Phyl set up Visual Limerick with the help of BNest Social Enterprise Incubator which is an initiative created specifically to support social entrepreneurs nurture their start-ups and caters for all types of organisations from charities to businesses with a social conscience.

Speaking of Visual Limerick, Phyl says “It’s really getting the message out to people in Limerick of growing that self-belief and outputting these amazing creations and it’s reaching an audience of people who wouldn’t normally go into the art college or places like that.”

Phyl described the display in the window of the Workbench on O Connell Street to us at a BNest event recently. The display consists of upcycled furniture, redesigned by Micheala Donegan, another BNester, who set up her ‘Back2New’ initiative and teaches fashion design and mentors people in the art of upcycling and redesigning old furniture. The work on the window is actually for sale, so not only is it uplifting to see more creativity around the city, but you could find yourself a gorgeous new piece of work to purchase.

Visual Limerick works alongside Product Design and Technology students in UL, Fine Art students in LSAD, start-up enterprises such as Michaela’s, and Limerick Woodturners Guild.

Contact details are always provided beside the displayed work in case anyone wishes to contact the creators.
