Walk for Peggy took place in the Devil’s Bit, a favourite walk of Peggy’s and her family’s.

The Hayes family of Newtown, Holycross joined forces with their relations, the Ryan, and extended family to organise a fundraiser for Milford Hospice in memory of the late Peggy Hayes, who passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2022.

‘Walk for Peggy’ took place on Sunday, August 28 and the families invited as many people as possible to support them in a climb of the Devil’s Bit, a favourite walk of Peggy’s and her family’s, including her husband Michael, and their sons Oliver, Owen, Mickey, Thomas, and Conor who were regular visitors of the beautiful location on the outskirts of Templemore.

Walk for Peggy was a huge success with over 65 people showing up to embark on this beautiful journey of remembering the powerhouse that was Peggy Hayes.

The family took to social media to express their gratitude, “Great turnout, thank you so much to everyone that turned up and down and no injuries thankfully!” It was a fantastic event that was adored by many.

The families also set up a GoFundMe, in case there were people that wanted to donate but could not attend the walk.

Caroline Burke, who organised the ‘Walk for Peggy’ online fundraiser explained further reasoning on why Milford was in need of donations, “In order to maintain services at levels capable of responding to the ever growing needs, there continues to be a significant reliance on fundraising support to make up the shortfall necessary to sustain the provision of this high quality of care on offer at Milford Hospice.”

With 122 donations, the fundraiser reached the goal of €4,000. In total, the families raised €14,243. All of which was donated to Milford Hospice on Friday, November 11, 2022.

Both the Hayes and Ryan families received amazing support from Milford Care Centre and experienced first-hand how excellent it is. Due to how much the Care Centre helped them, the families wanted to give back, and so they decided to hold the fundraiser in Peggy’s memory for Milford Hospice.

Milford Care Centre took to their Instagram and said: “The Hayes & Ryan Families organised ‘Walk for Peggy’ in the loving memory of Peggy Hayes. What started off as a family walk, soon turned into a lovely community walk and raised an amazing amount of money for the services of Milford Care Centre. Michael & family, be proud of what you have achieved and raised in Peggy’s memory. Thank you to everyone who supported and donated to this fundraiser.”

Milford Care Centre is not just a Hospice Inpatient Unit. They provide multiple services to the community.  This includes hospice at-home services, a nursing home, daycare for the elderly and those with palliative care needs. They also offer bereavement support for families.
