Walk Simons Way along the Wild Atlantic Way

Mid West Simon Community are a fantastic charity that help prevent homelessness as well as helping the homeless. They are hosting a trek along the Wild Atlantic Way called ‘Walk Simons Way’ on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 of October. It’s expected to have a big turn out for this fun weekend.

It’s 35 kilometers over the two days and it’s to raise funds for the charity but also for a fun day out and bring people together. All the money raised will go towards support for direct services. None of the funds will go towards operational costs. Professional walker guides have volunteered to guide people along the walk. There will be guides to suit everyone’s pace and people will not have to race after the professionals.

There is going to be meeting points at various locations. The first day of ‘Walk Simons Way’ on Saturday, October 8 will start from Liscannor to Doolin (20 km). There will be a 30 minute break at the Cliffs of Moher. You are also able to join the first day from the cliffs but you will have to contact the charity to let them know. On the second day, Sunday, October 9, it goes from Ballinalacken to Fanore and through the Caher Valley and there’ll be a 30 minute break at Caher Valley.

If people want to stay overnight Mid West Simon Community are going to give people a list of B&B’s and caravan park. If people want to sleep in a sleeping bag and tent they can do the two nights and stay over. There will be a space for people to camp. The walk takes about 4 hours per day but the scenery is fabulous so it’ll be very enjoyable. Particularly for families.

Mid West Simon Community has done an immense amount of work for the 1700 people they helped last year. This year, they’ve have a further 850 people that came to them this year. They help anyone who is currently homeless by having a food bank so that the homeless can get food they need. The have a prevention service for homelessness; a deposit loan scheme, advice and information, advocacy, tenancy support programme and work in partnership with the Irish Mortgage Holders Organisation (IMHO).

The charity has been in various offices throughout the years. However, it has remained in its current location (PO Box 489, Unit 1, Steamboat Quay, Dock Road, Limerick) since mid 2014.
