Thomond Primary School was full of laughter, song, and smiles this week as the primary school celebrated the significant milestone of a decade of educating pupils on the northside of Limerick City.

Students, staff, and families gathered to mark the special milestone, which included a rendition of “Happy Birthday” sung by the school‘s pupils. Sinéad Toomey, Thomond Primary School Principal, shared the school’s gratitude for the support of the community as the school held a “wonderful celebration to celebrate 10 years of our school”.

Thomond Primary School was founded in 2015 when St Munchin’s Boys School, St Munchin’s Girls School, and St Lelia’s Infant School came together to amalgamate the three education providers under one roof.

Principal Toomey looked back on the school’s journey, but also highlighted how the school continues to grow, she told I Love Limerick, “ This time last year we had a wellbeing evaluation, two inspectors from the Department of Education, who looked at how inclusive our practices were, and they really celebrated the culture and environment that we have grown here over the last 10 years.

“One of the recommendations that they made to us was to hold a celebration where we would pause and reflect and celebrate all of the great things that have happened.”

The Thomond Primary School Principal said the celebration was an opportunity for the staff and students to give thanks, saying, “ We are so grateful for all of the partners that have helped us to get to this point. We have wonderful students and an amazing parent body, lots of community partners from the other schools here, the Family Resource Centre, our school completion program, too many to mention, but we look forward to working with them again in partnership to bring our school to the next level over the next 10 years.”

One parent joining the celebrations on the day was Leanne Buckley, who is also a member of the Parents’ Council. Leanne said, “ I’m a mom of a sixth-class student, she’s been here many years, as has my son. He was here previously; he’s now in sixth-year. I have had many, many great years at Thomond Primary. We’ve had many, many great experiences. It’s an absolutely fantastic school; the teachers, the principal, the parents, the kids, it’s been a great experience.”

Leanne described how the school creates a great support network for pupils, parents, and staff. She said, “ The teachers are great with the kids. They have a fabulous support network. They have great SNAs, they have great support, they have fabulous resource teachers, and the time and effort that they put in with the kids is absolutely fantastic.”

As the young pupils’ rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ rang through the hallways, the event gave staff, families, and pupils the chance to reflect on the school’s journey so far, how it has become a huge part of the community, and what the future may hold.
