Nell said, “Personally, as an artist and a business owner, it’s lovely to be recognised. I work solo a lot in the studio, and oftentimes, if there is someone else here, it’s a family member, so they’re always going to tell you you’re great, but it’s just lovely that our customers and the wider public voted for us. And then once we got through to the next stage, it was kind of the judges who judged it; it’s just lovely.”

Nell described how the judge’s feedback gave them high marks for their work, social media presence, and their website, and acknowledged that the artist-led approach helped Pressed Flowers by Nell stand apart, with Nell saying, “ Personally, to hear that is the best feedback I could ever get.”

Pressed Flowers by Nell is Ireland’s leading pressed flower artist, specialising in bespoke framed pressed flower art from wedding bouquets. Based in Limerick, they provide a personal, hands-on service to brides all over Ireland, with flowers easily posted to their studio for safe preservation and framing.

Over recent years, Nell has seen the business grow with the number of brides having their flowers preserved tripling in recent years. The company has also seen products stocked in leading retailers such as Brown Thomas and Arnotts, ensuring the business has reached a national audience.

She told I Love Limerick it was a great moment to look at the work she has done, saying, “Running a business, of course, as everyone knows, it comes with its challenges. So to take time to step out of the business and kind of say, ‘okay, what I’m doing every day, it is making a difference, and it is worthwhile’.”

Nell credits her late grandmother, Nancy Lawless, for inspiring her craft, having learned flower pressing from a young age with many people saying “Nancy showed you the door and you kicked it open”.

The pressed flower artist said, “ I have her to thank for everything, even just my appreciation of nature was taught from her. Things like the actual pressing of the flowers, I learned at maybe the age of five or six from her, which I am so thankful for.

“In the more recent years, just to have her encouragement every day. I was always telling her about the business, and she even came into Brown Thomas in September, and we had a fabulous day. I got to show her all my pieces there.”

Speaking about her favourite pieces, Nell noted that they can change every week, but she does have three important ones that stand out, one in particular being a Robin, inspired by her late grandfather.

The Robin became the first fine art print she created and has shared happiness throughout Ireland, saying, “ I totally made it with him in mind because we always say whenever there’s a robin, ‘Oh, that’s granddad.’ And the day my nana passed away was actually the day of the Robin.

“As well, it has touched the heart of so many people all over Ireland and beyond; we’ve sold an incredible amount of them. It’s heartwarming to read what they mean to other people.”

When asked if the award is a milestone or a stepping stone, Nell said, “ A bit of both, to be honest. My hopes would be to continue like I’ve always said from the very start, I just want to love going to work every day and enjoy it. Now it’s not possible every day, but that really is why I opened my own business: to enjoy life and to be able to create my art for people who appreciate it. So, I suppose my hopes are to continue to grow it, but at a very sustainable rate!”

With a long list of 5-star reviews, Pressed Flowers by Nell consistently receives praise for Nell’s creativity, the team’s care, attention to detail, and love for capturing the everlasting stories whispered by flowers.

Nell greatest inspiration for her career was her grandmother Nancy. Green fingers certainly run in the family thanks to the dedication of Nancy Lawless, the founder of Lawless Flowers who sadly peacefully passed away on November 21st, 2025.

Lawless Flower shop in Limerick was established in Bedford row by Nancy over 50 years ago. She started with a little bit of money and a lot of hope. Her son Dan Lawless was always by her side to help.

Nancy opened the prominent city centre shop ‘Lawless Flowers’ on Roches Street in 1982. After many years of hard work Nancy retired. She was one of the best known and best loved florists in Limerick creating a reputation as one of the best flower shops in the country. Dan and his partner Clive run Lawless Flowers in Limerick Roche’s Street to this day.

Nell said, “My uncle Dan owns Lawless Flowers, my mother Helen is a florist and then my great-grandmother and my great-great grandmother were both florists as well,” said Nell.

“My nana would always be telling me how her mother was such a great florist and how they’d have beautiful flowers in the house and she used to compete in flower competitions all of the time. I am so honoured to follow on her footsteps.”
