West Limerick Youth Clubs Big Winners at Youth Games
Young people from across Limerick gathered at Newcastlewest’s Community Centre recently for Limerick Youth Service’s annual Youth Games, with the winners progressing to the national finals. With table tennis, basketball, soccer and the new edition of dodgeball, it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening in West Limerick with almost 400 young people in attendance.
Askeaton-Ballysteen and Ballingarry Youth Clubs had the honour of been Limerick Youth Service’s inaugural dodgeball champions, winning the under 18s and 15s competitions respectively. Huge crowds flocked to the soccer event which saw St. Senan’s Youth Club (Foynes) successfully defend their U18 boys’ title, while Ballingarry’s girls were crowned the U15 champions. Meanwhile, there was a late finish and a contender for the longest penalty shootout in history in a highly competitive U15 boys’ soccer competition. After beating hosts Newcaslewest Youth Club in an epic semi-final penalty shootout, the final proved one step too far for Ballingarry as they were beaten by Askeaton-Ballysteen.
Broadford Youth Club enjoyed their first taste of success on the basketball court winning the U18’s tournament with Ballingarry taking the honours in the U15 category. Not all the trophies ended up out west with Fedamore Youth Club taking the table tennis crown east of the River Deel as Arthur O’Donnell won the U15s event in what was an all Fedamore final.
Away from the sporting action teenagers played pool, chess, draughts and enjoyed the best of Newcastlewest Youth Club’s famed hospitality.
‘It was a great evening and the young people certainly enjoyed themselves,’ said Eithne Stembridge, Limerick Youth Service, who thanked the young people for making the long journey and contributing to what was another memorable event.
‘I’d also like to thank the volunteers, staff and particularly our hosts at Newcastlewest Youth Club who played their part in making the games a great success,’ added Eithne.
