Limerick developed as a tourism destination and Wild Atlantic Way gateway
At a recent meeting at The Savoy Hotel between Failte Ireland, Limerick City and County Council and the wider members of the Limerick tourism industry, Limerick city was identified as a Wild Atlantic Way Gateway.
Limerick City was identified as a Gateway as it offers visitors a broad range of accommodation, a wide variety of daytime visitor attractions and activities and plenty of restaurants and evening entertainment. Also, as a main transport hub for the area, it is a perfect base for visitors exploring the Wild Atlantic Way route.
Speaking about the importance of the Limerick Wild Atlantic Way Gateway Strategy, Minister of State at the Department of Finance and the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, Patrick O’ Donovan TD, said, “I’m delighted to see the Wild Atlantic Way Gateway Strategy for Limerick being progressed. This is a huge opportunity for Limerick to realise its full tourism potential and position itself as a vibrant, must-see destination”.
Miriam Kennedy, Fáilte Ireland’s Head of the Wild Atlantic Way, explained the importance of industry collaboration in the development of the strategy:
“Working with local tourism businesses in Limerick is essential for the success of the Wild Atlantic Way Gateway strategy – our aim is to create a strategy that will propel the tourism industry in Limerick forward and deliver huge benefits for both the visitor and the local economy. Today we looked at recent research on visitor and tour operator perceptions of Limerick and how this will shape the development of a commercial tourism plan for the coming months. Spearheaded by Fáilte Ireland, the Limerick Gateway Strategy will outline specific actions and targets and will be closely aligned to Limerick City and County Council’s recently launched Limerick Tourism Development Strategy 2019-2023.”
Limerick City was chosen as one of two pilot towns/cities to test the Gateway concept alongside Killarney over a three-year period. The Limerick Wild Atlantic Way Gateway Strategy will be finalised later this year, with recommendations and actions for local industry from 2020 – 2022.
Patrick O’Donovan said, “With its close proximity to the Wild Atlantic Way route and a wealth of world-class attractions, built heritage and amazing food experiences, Limerick has so much to offer visitors and is the perfect base for touring the region.”
