WATCH William O’Donoghue celebrating ‘the memories people will make’ with All-Ireland win

William O’Donoghue encouraged young people to stick with sport and celebrated the memories people will make at the Limerick hurlers homecoming

Limerick hurling star William O’Donoghue says the memories being made throughout the All-Ireland win celebrations are an important part of the journey for the team, and he encourages young people to stick with sport.

Speaking with I Love Limerick at the homecoming event in Pery Square, O’Donoghue told Richard Lynch a major part of the win is seeing people creating memories with their families.

He said, “It’s great to be back in Limerick, looking forward to getting out to the homecoming, seeing so many young boys, girls, parents and whatnot. I think the big thing for us is when you win in All-Ireland, obviously there’s an immediate release on the pitch, but I think the memories it allows people to make with their families…

“I have a nextdoor neighbour, Brian, who brought his young daughter to the match on Sunday, and for them to be able to make memories together, I’m sure that’s something Brian will remember forever.”

The Limerick star said the victory isn’t just about the team. He said, “It’s not just about us, it’s about the memories people will make yesterday, today, and throughout the week.”

Encouraging young people to stay involved in sport, William noted the life lessons people can learn. He said, “I think the most important thing is that you listen to your coaches and you just keep playing. I think participation is the most important thing. If you give up, you have no chance. Just keep sticking at it, participation is the biggest thing.

“I think you make great friends, you learn great lessons. Sport is a great way to stand back and approach life in terms of adversity and everything else. I think all young boys and girls should be encouraged to participate in sport, whether it’s going well or not; it teaches a lot of life lessons.”

Thanking the people of Limerick, O’Donoghue said, “We don’t just do this for ourselves, we do it for the people of Limerick. Every day we go out there, we have the Limerick crest on our chest.

“John [Kiely] made a point on Friday night that every player who’s ever played for Limerick has worn the crest on their chest, and I guess we represent all those who’ve gone before us and everyone who is yet to come.”

“If all we do is inspire another generation to keep hurling and to represent Limerick, we’ll be very happy.”
