Wired FM Free Media Course for Marginalised Groups Announced

Limerick’s student radio station Wired FM will run a QQI Level 3 media expression course aimed at people from marginalised groups.

‘Supporting the Voices of Marginalised Groups’ will run over six Fridays at Wired FM and will have students get to grips with how the media works and get involved in radio that makes a difference.

This Wired FM free media course is open to people who identify as being part of a minority group, specifically members of the Travelling community, migrants or asylum seekers, members of the local LGBTIQ community, and former Offenders.

No specific prior knowledge is required, but it is particularly suited to people with an interest in community and social issues.

It would also suit those considering volunteering with Community Radio stations, those who wish to build their confidence in communicating, and those wishing to gain an understanding of how media production works.

In a fun and friendly atmosphere, you’ll explore how radio and TV shapes the world we live in. In a group, you’ll help make a radio programme you’d like to listen to, on the things, big and small that matter to you. You’ll strengthen your communication skills, become confident and learn how to get your voice heard.

Last year Wired FM ran courses that saw over 30 trainees be certified with QQI level 3 and level 4 certificates.  This course is a nationally accredited course leading to a QQI Level 3 Media Expression on the National Framework of Qualifications, awarded by QQI.

Wired FM is a fully licensed radio station that broadcasts throughout Limerick city and its suburbs. The station signed a new 10-year licence this summer, and in the new college semester, the station begins its 22nd year of broadcast.

The course runs from September 8th, 2017 and October 20th (no class Sep 29th). The closing date for applications is the 1st of September.
