Joy Neville to referee at the Womens Rugby World Cup 2017

Former back-row forward Joy Neville is set to referee at the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2017. 

The selection of Women’s World Cup referees was made after a comprehensive review of refereeing performances by the World Rugby Match Officials Selection Committee.

Neville is one of nine others who have been selected to officiate the event, which will be taking place in August. Limerick’s rugby star is not going alone, however, as she is one of two Irish referees who were chosen to officiate the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2017.

Neville herself has played at the Women’s Rugby World Cup in the past. The former Ireland captain made history in October of last year when she was named as an assistant referee for the European Challenge Cup and in doing so, became the first woman to ever officiate in a European rugby match.

On a club level, Joy Neville was a key member of the Munster team that claimed six interprovincial trophies over a seven-year period before Neville announced her retirement.

After spending a short amount of time in punditry, the Munster and Ireland athlete pursued a future in refereeing. Having made her refereeing debut in an under 15 friendly match between St Munchin’s College and CBC in December 2013, the Limerick referee has made her way in under three years to taking part in her first European cup match as a judge. 

Women’s Rugby World Cup is now regarded as a key event in the global sporting calendar that has grown from an invitational tournament to one with a robust qualification process, live broadcast, good attendances and an enthusiastic worldwide following. 

The individual match appointments, along with the selection of Television Match Officials, will be announced in the near future.
