PHOTOS: Young Irish Filmmaker of the Year 2018 heats up as regional screenings take place

Fresh Film Festival’s Young Irish Filmmaker of the Year competition is moving closer to crowning this year’s winner with the Young Irish Filmmaker of the Year 2018 Limerick heats taking place on Tuesday, March 6th at the Belltable Arts Centre. The event will feature over 30 films screened by young filmmakers from Limerick, Clare, Kerry and Tipperary. Films by young filmmakers from Germany, Denmark and the United States will also be screened as part of Fresh Film Festival International category.
The Young Irish Filmmaker of the Year 2018 heats are taking place all over the country next week. Six heats will take place over three days with screenings in Cork, Galway and Dublin. Films from over 20 counties will be screened as well as international films from 13 different countries including Iran, Bangladesh and Canada.
Fresh Film Festival’s Young Filmmaker of the Year Awards has received almost 1,500 submissions for this year’s festival, the highest number of submissions in the festival’s 22-year history.

Films shortlisted for the final will be announced at the conclusion of each regional heat and will be screened at Fresh Film Festival 2018 in Limerick from March 20th to 25th, when the Festival will crown Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year 2018. Other highlights of Fresh Film Festival 2018 include feature screenings and workshops including an animation workshop with Brazilian animator Alexandre Almeida Juruena De Mattos.

Reflecting on the volume of entries for this year’s festival, Fresh Film Festival Director Jayne Foley commented, “Fresh Film Festival is all about encouraging young people to tell their stories through film, so the record number of submissions this year shows we have a nation of young storytellers with something to say and the creative means to say it. We’ve been overwhelmed by the entries this year, the future of filmmaking in Ireland is bright”.
Fresh Film Festival encourages young people from Ireland and overseas, aged 7 to 18 years, to create, exhibit and share films. The festival provides an opportunity for these young filmmakers to have their work seen on a cinema screen for the first time and to compete for the title of Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year. Other awards include the Radharc Trust Award for the best documentary film, the Boulder Media Animation Award for the best-animated film, The RTÉ 60 Second Short Film Award for best 1-minute film, the RTÉ Factual Award for the best factual film and the TG4 Film in the Irish Language.
