Young Social Innovators Speak Out at the Limetree Theatre.

On March 3, Young Social Innovators bring their Speak Out Tour to the Limetree Theatre, Mary Immaculate College. The YSI Speak Out Tour brings together all the young social innovators in Ireland in any one year.

The Speak Out Tour is a way for YSI teams to advocate for change. If you want things to change, then you need to get people on board with your idea; tell them what needs to be done, why and how your idea is going to make a difference. An idea on its own won’t change things unless it becomes reality. YSI teams come to the YSI regional Speak Out events and present their very own Speak Out to an audience of peers and local communities.

Starting at  1:00pm in the Limetree Theatre there will be a number of guest speakers, followed by a number of teams who will be invited onto the stage to “speak out”. Among the guests speakers will be community activist and founder of ILoveLimerick.com Richard Lynch.

The Speak Outs have become an integral part of the Social Innovation ACTION Programme which sees thousands of young people engage in youth-led team projects on a social issue of concern to them or their communities. Each team is invited to give a two minute creative presentation to a large audience of their peers, a YSI Panel and invited guests. The Speak Out events provide an opportunity for social innovation teams from the same region to meet each other, share ideas and gain a deeper insight into the work of Young Social Innovators as a movement rather than individual project teams working in isolation. These events are often the first time that young people experience advocating on behalf of others. They have an opportunity to present why they feel their issue is so important as well as what they are doing about it, and now they are making a real difference.

This year over 6,600 young people aged 15-18 are taking part in the Social Innovation ACTION Programme. The participants are working on hundreds of social innovation projects all across Ireland. Health, homelessness, domestic violence, LGBT rights, disability, human trafficking and bullying are just some of the issues that young people will speak out about throughout the month of March.

So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
