Last year’s Young Social Innovators video:
Young Social Innovators (YSI) is a non-profit organisation that believes in the power of youth. They work with thousands of young people every year giving them the skills and confidence to tackle difficult social issues and to bring about real change for people and communities. The Young Social Innovators Speak Out Tour 2017 took place throughout Ireland this March, with 16 Speak Out events taking place.
Right now throughout Ireland over 7,000 young people are working in teams to come up with creative and innovative ways to make a difference to a social issue close to their hearts. Project teams over the years have tackled issues such as mental health, disability, inclusion, homelessness, bullying, LGBT rights, missing people, human trafficking and cyber safety (to name a few!).
Last week, 21 schools took part in the Young Social Innovators Speak Out that took place in Limerick at the Lime Tree Theatre, as part of the Young Social Innovators Speak Out Tour 2017.
These events are empowering for young people as they give them the opportunity to present their ideas to large audiences of their peers, special guests, local councils, community leaders and educators. Each team has two minutes on stage to creatively present the work they are doing.
YSI usually invite a guest speaker to address the audience, to welcome the young people, congratulate them and motivate them to continue speaking out, standing up for others and making a positive difference in the world. Last year, I was honoured to be the guest speaker on the day and I decided to bring a special guest with me, Luke Culhane from #createnohate, whose video about cyberbullying went viral and has been watched all over the globe.
This year, they asked Luke back to be the guest speaker for his work with cyberbullying as he is an exceptional inspiration for these teenagers and our current Limerick Person of the Year. Congrats Luke and well done!
