A takeaway with a difference opens on Nicholas Street on Thursday, November 4.

Open Thursday’s and Friday’s from 3pm – 5.30pm, Zing offers delicious and nutritious takeaways for an affordable price.

From fajitas to chicken tenders, a classic korma to spicy wedges, Zing offers customers the healthy option without compromising on taste.

Everything on Zing’s menu contributes to customers’ 5-a-day, contains fewer calories then a standard takeaway and is made from primarily Irish and local ingredients.

With kids meals costing just €4.50, Zing is a great way to feed the whole family while keeping costs low.

Curator Zelie Houlihan hopes to expand takeaway options available in communities that support a healthy diet and bring positive benefits to the health and wellbeing of families.

The social enterprise start-up works with community service providers to utilise existing commercial kitchen facilities and provide nutritious takeaways.

A 13-week pilot programme, Zing has been endorsed by several top chefs, including Limerick chef and food consultant Tom Flavin, Galway Michelin Star chef, author and restaurateur, J.P. Mc Mahon, chef-proprietor of Canteen, Catherine Street, Paul Williams and head chef at Bunratty Castle Hotel, Tony Ryan.

Several community and food groups have also contributed significantly to the establishment of Zing, including Island Community Partners Limerick, Limerick Enterprise Development Partnership, the Limerick City Community Development Project, UL Nutrition and Dietetics Department, and TUS Food Department.

If Zing’s trial period is successful, Ms Houlihan hopes to expand the start-up and offer employment and training opportunities within the local community.

“One of the interesting things about this project is that it is supported by a number of Irish chefs and Limerick-based community organisations,” Zelie Houlihan told I Love Limerick.

“I think Zing shows that when people come together, you get great results.”

Hungry customers can choose to click-and-collect online or simply walk in.
