LIT and MIC join forces with Empower Summer Camps

For the last 3 years, LIT and MIC have been working with entrepreneurs, academics, youth organisations and industry to develop this high quality, educational, activity-based programme for young people. LIT and MIC join forces with Empower Summer Camps

Empowering the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators is central to two free summer camps for secondary school students running in Limerick and Tipperary this June and facilitated by Limerick Institute of Technology in partnership with Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.

The HEA funded Empower Summer Camps have been designed to help young people from the Mid West develop and grow their innovative, entrepreneurial and creative skills, while also giving them a unique opportunity to work on solving real-life problems.

Gillian Barry, Head of Innovation & Enterprise at LIT, described the programme as a collaborative effort between LIT and MIC in enhancing the skill needs of the region.

“Every young person we work with has the potential to solve problems, to create, disrupt and impact our future in a positive way – to be the next generation of change makers. For that to be fully realised it needs to be nurtured and developed. To power that potential we have created this high quality, educational, activity-based programme.” 

“Empower promises to be a week-long immersive, social and fun experience whilst also challenging young people who sign up as they develop valuable skills as well as make friendships for life.”

Aimed at senior cycle post-primary students Empower will take place on both LIT & MIC campuses in Thurles and Limerick and includes field trips to innovative companies in the region.

The first summer camp will take place from Monday, June 10 in Thurles with the second summer camp taking place in Limerick during the week beginning June 17, 2019.

Registration for the free summer camps is now open at www.LIT.ie/RDI/Empower, with places limited to 25 students each week.

According to Dr Maeve Liston, Director of Enterprise and Community Engagement at MIC, “The camps will further complement the principles of the junior and senior cycles in our second level education system through a hands-on, interactive, informal, learning experience, thereby promoting innovation, communication, personal effectiveness, critical and creative thinking. The programme will also put a strong emphasis on working with others, another skill set prioritised in the Framework for Junior and Senior Cycle Education.”
