Exhibition: Cruthú Ó Mhná

Event Series Event Series (See All)

February 1 @ 10:00 AM 5:00 PM

Cruthú Ó Mhná is hosted by members of female collective Mná na nEalaín in collaboration with Limerick City and County Council and Limerick City Museum, in recognition of the national holiday for the Irish Patron Saint, Brigid. The opening celebrations will take place on Thursday, 1st February 2024 at 5:45pm and the exhibition will be open to the public until Monday, 5th February at Limerick Museum, 97 Henry Street, Limerick.

The title of the exhibition ‘Cruthú Ó Mhná’ translates to ‘creations from women,’ the over arching theme of this exhibition. Artists were asked to consider and to celebrate their process of art making. From this, matters surrounding female identity and motherhood, as well as using narrative, landscape, and abstract art to convey political and social subjects are prevalent in the artworks showcased.

February 1st marks the Christian festival of St. Brigid, which coincides with the Celtic festival Imbolc honouring the Goddess Brigid and marked the beginning of spring, beginning the cycle of creation again. Brigid the Celtic Goddess has parallel associations with St Brigid who is patroness of many things, including poetry, printers, healing, and smithcraft. Fire is also a shared symbol. Thus, this exhibition is a celebration of the duality of Brigid as both Goddess and Saint. 2024 marks 1500 years since the death of St Brigid.

Cruthú Ó Mhná features work from selected artists; Anna Marie Savage, Aoife Cawley, Claire Murphy, Clare Hartigan, Helle Helsner, Joy Kavanagh, Maria McSweeney, Nicola Sheehan, Tiffany Glenn aka. Fannyland, and Verona Stellet. With work from selected Mná na nEalaín members; Angelina Foster, Lara Grufferty, Carol Kennedy, and Sibéal Riordan.

Mná na nEalaín established in 2021 following Creative Europe funded training programme ‘Womarts’ aims to create opportunities for female identifying persons through collaboration and participation. To this end the female collective invited ten female identifying Irish artists to collaborate in this exhibition, through open call. Cruthú Ó Mhná follows on from Mná na nEalaín’s successful national exhibition Bantracht in 2023 which was hosted in Limerick, Tipperary, and Kildare.
