BNest Social Incubator 2016/17 showcase

The BNest Social Incubator 2016/17 showcase will be taking place on Friday, March 24 at the Nexus Innovation Centre at the University of Limerick.

BNest, in partnership with Nexus Centre UL, have been running a dedicated social enterprise Incubator programme since September 2016. In this programme nine emergent social enterprises, one of which is Limerick’s Gateway to Education, have been working on both developing and augmenting their social enterprise endeavours.

To showcase these enterprises and the progress they have made, an event is being run in the Nexus Innovation Centre at the University of Limerick to help them display to the Mid West region their endeavours and allow others to view the real social impact they are having on the broader community they serve. In addition to the display booths, a short informal presentation will be made by each enterprise.

Limerick’s Gateway to Education, a BNest Social Incubator 2016/17 participant, are a non-profit social enterprise organisation created in Limerick in April 2012 to address economic and social barriers to education. This social enterprise organisation work to relieve financial pressures on families at the start of each school term; to connect parents and families to resources that will ensure full participation in the school system and community; to provide educational support not otherwise available to primary and secondary students in at-risk families. These activities serve to increase participation and achievement in education and the wider community. Since setting up, Limerick’s Gateway to Education have had a significantly positive impact on the Limerick and have worked tirelessly to ensure equal education opportunities for all.

The two-hour BNest Social Incubator 2016/17 event, kicking off at 15:30 pm will present two keynote speakers to address the importance of social enterprise efforts and the challenges society encounters and overcomes through those stepping forward to tackle these challenges.

Attending the event and joining in the BNest Social Incubator 2016/17 celebrations of the progress made by BNest programme participants are John Lonergan and Dr Briga Hynes. John Lonergan, former governor of Mountjoy will be speaking at the event and is a passionate advocate for the marginalised in society. He advocates the need to step beyond the norm in attempting to meaningfully tackle such challenges. Dr Briga Hynes, the second keynote speaker, is a specialist in entrepreneurship at the Kemmy Business School in the University of Limerick. Dr Briga Hynes is acutely aware 0f the real impact that successful social enterprises can achieve.
