Limerick City and County Council confirm the “Meanwhile Use Scheme” of Cruises Street public realm enhancement proposals to put a focus on local businesses and street’s appeal for Summer 2024
Limerick City and County Council’s Place-Making Team through consultation with Cruises’ Street traders has developed a “Meanwhile Use Scheme” of public realm enhancement proposals for the city centre street.
The announcement of the scheme is a huge step towards revitalising Cruises Street, putting a focus on supporting local businesses, enhancing the street’s appeal, and will “strengthen the links to the Milk Market”.
The enhancement proposals will be implemented for Summer 2024 as part of a longer-term strategy of improving public-realm in Cruises Street and the Market Quarter area of the city.
In a statement issued to I Love Limerick, a Limerick City and County Council spokesperson confirmed, “Limerick City and County Council’s Place-Making Team, in consultation with the Cruises’ Street Traders, have developed a ‘Meanwhile Use Scheme’ of public realm enhancement proposals for Cruises Street, designed to support the local businesses, to make the street more attractive and strengthen the links to the Milk Market, which will be implemented for the Summer of 2024.”
Despite being one of the city’s most important shopping streets as well as having historical significance, Cruises Street has seen challenges in recent years with a decline in foot traffic and business closures; most notably the McDonald’s fast food restaurant. However, as a symbol of the street’s potential, most retail units on the street have remained occupied following a difficult number of years which included the Covid-19 pandemic.
It is hoped the public realm strategy will help bring the street on further making it an attractive area for shoppers and business owners.
“The proposals are a first step to a longer-term strategy of comprehensive public realm enhancements for Cruises Street and the Market Quarter area as part of an Urban Regeneration and Development Fund under Project Ireland 2040,” The spokesperson said, adding, “The Council will be continuing to engage with the City Centre stakeholders and the public as these plans are developed over the course of 2024.”
